December 2021 NoPantsRecordStoreShopping

December was the month that many fellow music junkies shared their love of music with a link of some of the music they have discovered. The best way to get your head out of the sand to check out music is searching the hashtags #BandcampFriday or #NoPantsRecordStoreShopping.

It costs you $0 to share a link on your twitter account and while you think hashtags are silly, they are super fabulous search engines. The more a hashtag is used the more it trends. Wouldn’t it be nice if we saw a hashtag that supports independent music (all genres) trend on twitter?

Don’t forget to follow the hashtag #NoPantsRecordStoreShopping the first Friday of the month to help support bands on Bandcamp Friday.

And always a big thank you to my fellow music junkie friends in tweeting out their favourites for everyone else to check out.

@EatKS reminded me about #BandcampFriday and her fabulous #NoPantsRecordStoreShopping. I've been listening to @ACTORStheband since 2017 and have had the privilege of seeing them perform seven times. They keep getting better. https://actors.bandcamp.com/music

https://devours.bandcamp.com because DEVOURS is funnysad lyrically, with wicked synth hooks, seriously danceable beats, and a lot of glitter. Self-described Mutant DIY Homo Pop is apt and very good. https://instagram.com/devours.ufo?utm_medium=copy_link

I've been a bad Bandcamper this year, but here's some stuff I've been digging for #nopantsrecordstoreshopping First is The Hawkins "Silence is a Bomb", a cracking straight up rock record. https://thehawkinsband.bandcamp.com/album/silence-is-a-bomb

I know this is a bit on the older side (2014), but this release from The Bambir is great. They're a second generation Armenian band that incorporate ethnic sounds and instrumentation with tropes of modern rock music.

Nine Treasures are a Mongolian metal band who, like The Bambir, incorporate cultural elements into their music and lyrics. Instead of a normal "best of" the band picked what songs best represented them, and re-recorded them.

My #NoPantsRecordStoreShopping tweets are gonna be poor today so have a banger to start. Quirky electronic pop with 2020s angst from Mari Dangerfield

I've been obsessed with the latest from Montreal's Hippie Hourrah (named after the Jacques Dutronc yé-yé classic) for the last few months –– jangly and danceable, this one is among my top 2021 releases! H

MORE #CanCon! London, ON's Mononegatives released ANOTHER split today, this time w/Albany, NY's Mystery Girl. If you dig fuzzy punk garage, you've come to the right place! And playing Toronto tomorrow night! https://mononegatives.bandcamp.com/album/mononegatives-mysterygirl-split…

A few weeks ago, they released a synth-influenced EP https://mononegatives.bandcamp.com/album/mononegatives-brainspots-split…– in Sept, a split EP w/Brainspots

The death of Dan Sartain in March was an unexpected loss to American rock, but the music will live on –– Arise, Dan Sartain, Arise was recorded last year, w/profits from the LP going into trust for his daughter

Grip yourself a copy of Chumps' The Problems with Saxophones, a gritty garage punk/freestyle jazz masterpiece if you love No Wave. Recorded 1977-1980 & originally released in 1984, this album is PURE ENERGY!

*denotes link no longer works

It's been 5 years since we last heard from Edmonton's Archaics but their new one proves it was worth the wait. And I Look to You? builds on the avant-rock of 2016's Soft Focus. Strings, piano, love! Check it out! https://thearchaics.bandcamp.com/album/and-i-lo*

After recent heart surgery, my friend & former radio colleague in Winnipeg, Chris Friesen (aka Freaking Snap), released this 28-minute ode to Dave, his Aortic Valve. With 764 releases & counting, he has synth FOR DAYS. All the hearts <3

Don't miss Austin, TX-by-way-of Grand Rapids, MI's Nolan Potter's latest (there's been a few this year), Music is Dead, released by Castle Face in Sept. Bedroom psych perfection! https://nolanpotter.bandcamp.com/album/music-is-dead-2… 'Stubborn Bubble' is my jam!

Cheers to @DamagedGoodsRdo for pointing out South Wales' The Bug Club's latest, Pure Particles, which is right up my alley. Sweet, dual-vocal garage pop w/a touch of the Velvets & Jonathan Richmond

One more release to round out today's #NoPantsRecordStoreShopping for December's #BandcampFriday. Melbourne, Aus' Traffik Island embodies the 60s psych folk pop tradition on their new album, A Shrug of The Shoulders. Put yourself in a summer state of mind!

Not a new band: but new to me. Russian folk pop with so much joy. Otava Yo are worthy of constant rotation https://yurtamusic.bandcamp.com/track/sumetskaya…

This has to be my favourite single of the year from the UK. If you liked Dry Cleaning then Wet Leg take that vibe and quadrupöe it

New to me, but already a favourite after being blown away by them at the @atribecalledred show - check out @rvrs416 https://rvrs416.bandcamp.com/album/beat-tape-1-2…

One of my favourite bands of the past year, this track is - fittingly - pure fire. https://deathwaits.bandcamp.com/track/burn-everything…

Brilliant post-punk band; dark, danceable, immersive - get their new album (and then their backlist) in your ears! https://actors.bandcamp.com/album/acts-of-worship…

Love 80's music (of course you do)? Unique, soul hitting, fun covers with just - as stated by the band - sax, axe & vox. One of my fave tracks: https://deuxpechemode.bandcamp.com/track/crying-out-loud-for-love-the-box-cover… @DeuxpecheMode

If you haven't come across this band yet, you can't go wrong with their latest release. A refusal to be pegged brings a wondrous variety, check them out! https://thekvb.bandcamp.com/album/unity-2 @TheKVB

Music made for staring up at nothing (or with your eyes closed just being) while it washes over you. Literally brand new to me; gorgeous stuff. https://damonandnaomi.bandcamp.com/album/a-sky-record

Shoegaze from Scotland! I've been listening to these guys for years, and they never disappoint. Sonically crunchy guitars, psychedelic laden goodness. https://wozniak.bandcamp.com/album/bruises @band_wozniak

Cannot get enough of this tune (waiting for the full album) by Billy Swivs via @DaptoneRecords Toe-tapping soul that takes you back to your mod days. Get it in your ears! https://daptonerecords.bandcamp.com/album/time-is-not-on-my-side…

One more #NoPantsRecordStoreShopping tonight, a gorgeous collection of covers of my favourite band The Cure. With @SceneNoir and @ACTORStheband (two CDN bands you NEED to get into), put together by @TBTCIRecords, it's well worth your time.

Bandcamp Friday: I got the debut 7" from Carpet Burn (Melbourne, Australia). This one has some cool 80s indie/Flying Nun Records vibes. Favorite track is "Butterfinger Hands" https://carpetburnlarping.bandcamp.com/album/i-cant-believe-its-not-carpet-burn

Gen Pop - PPM66. Radical post-punk from Olympia, WA. I once saw them kill it playing in someone's kitchen in Richmond, VA! Favorite track: "Bright Light People".

https://genpopolympia.bandcamp.com/album/ppm66

#BandcampFriday The debut Los Bitchos album isn't out yet but you can pre order and listen to a few tracks. I love the instrumental/psych/tropical vibe of their songs.

@palelipsband (Montreal, Quebec). I picked up their latest album After Dark. Catchy fun 70s style punk/power pop . "I'm A Witch" should be a new Halloween classic. Also love "Hiding From The Moon" https://palelips.bandcamp.com/album/after-dark…

A crazy fusion of funk/jazz/electronic beats with a serious Middle Eastern vibe

BEAM - a hardcore punk band from Baton Rouge

Latin Jazz and Soul as it’s finest

“A Tu Lado” is my favourite track. I highly recommend headphones because the musical arrangement is better appreciated that way

Benny Trokan is like a mix between Benjamin Booker and Michael Rault. If you don’t know any of these names, if you like a 60's garage soul vibe you need to check them all out.https://daptonerecords.bandcamp.com/album/get-it-in-the-end

This electronic instrumental vibe is not my usual wheelhouse but I feel it tells a story, I think @BadUnderpants would appreciate this album

If the shipping wasn't so brutal I would buy a physical copy of it.

If you like Reggae Ska Rock Steady you might like Transilvanians from Spain

This track reminds me a lot of the band Pop Will Eat Itself

So I challenge those “music” fans that said the best music was in the 80’s or 90’s to have a little, and maybe skip a coffee and buy a track!

Stuff I bought in December but didn't tweet out
